Educated at the Jesuit college at Vannes, Lesage started his literary career as a translator. After a number of reasonably successful years, he produced his first play, Crispin rival de son maitre () which was well-received. In , he produced Turcaret, undoubtedly his best ing in , Lesage published the first part of Gil Blas de Santillane, a masterpiece that would take.
